Last week my family walked through something that reminded me how quickly life can change. My mom was in a car accident on her way home from babysitting my son, and the moment I heard the news my heart immediately filled with worry. In times like that, it’s easy to let fear take over. But one verse kept popping up: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” — Romans 8:28.
Even though accidents and uncertainty don’t feel good in the moment, I began to see glimpses of God’s presence right in the middle of the situation. On the way to the hospital, my mom and I had one of the most holy and unexpected moments we’ve ever shared together. We sat in the car listening to the song “Gratitude” by Brandon Lake, and before long we were both crying. Not tears of fear, but tears of thankfulness. In the middle of the shock and the stress, we were overwhelmed with gratitude that she was okay and that God had protected her.
What made that moment even more meaningful is knowing that it likely would not have happened the same way a year ago. My mom gave her life to Christ last year, and I truly believe moments like that, where worship replaces worry and gratitude replaces fear, are only possible because of the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Instead of panic filling the car, there was worship. Instead of only focusing on the accident, we found ourselves thanking God.
It was one of those quiet, sacred moments where you can feel that God is near. A moment where heaven feels just a little closer.
Looking back, I’m reminded that God doesn’t just show up in big miracles. Sometimes He shows up in a worship song, in tears of gratitude, or in a car ride on the way to the hospital. Even in an accident, God was still writing a story of protection, faith, and thankfulness.
I don’t know all the reasons things like this happen, but I do know this: God was present in every moment. And because of that, my heart is filled with gratitude.
Here are some thoughtful reflection questions you could use with your devotional or blog post to engage readers:
-
When was a time you experienced fear or uncertainty, and how did God’s presence become evident in that moment?
-
How does Romans 8:28 encourage you to trust God even in situations that feel overwhelming or scary?
-
Can you recall a moment when gratitude replaced worry or fear in your life? What made that possible?
-
How has the Holy Spirit worked in your heart to bring peace or perspective during difficult times?
-
In what ways can you cultivate more awareness of “holy moments” in your everyday life?
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being present with us in every moment of life—both the joyful ones and the unexpected ones. When fear tries to take over, remind us that You are still working all things together for good. Fill our hearts with gratitude even in difficult circumstances, and help us recognize the holy moments where Your presence is near.
Holy Spirit, guide our hearts so that worship rises up instead of worry. Strengthen our faith and remind us that You are always with us. Thank You for Your protection, Your mercy, and the ways You continue to draw us closer to You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
